How It Works

What the drawdown rule checks

01

Set the drawdown amount

Max drawdown is a percentage of your starting account size, for example 10% of a $100,000 account is $10,000.

02

Find the breach level

On a static account the level never moves. On a trailing account it rises with your highest balance or equity, and some firms lock it once it reaches your starting balance.

03

Size risk to the distance

The gap between your current balance and the breach level, or your daily limit if it is closer, is the most you can lose. Split it by the losing streak you want to survive.

Static: Breach = Start − Max DD  |  Trailing: Breach = Peak − Max DD  |  Locking: Breach = lower of (Peak − Max DD) and Start

Check your firm's rulebook: some firms measure drawdown on balance, others on equity including open trades. Trailing may update intraday or only at the end of the day, and daily limits may be based on the start-of-day balance or the initial account size. Rules and percentages change, so confirm the exact wording with your firm before relying on this result.
